Abstract
This meta-analysis evaluated the impact of barley fiber on postprandial glucose regulation. Several databases, including PubMed-Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and the Korean Studies Information Service System, were searched up to November 2022. Randomized controlled trials with 172 participants were included in this study. Barley fiber intake improved the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) of postprandial blood glucose levels by -17.12 mmol/L?min, the glycemic index (GI) by -23.36, and 1-hour blood glucose by -0.30 mmol/L. However, no significant effect was observed on insulin iAUC. Funnel plots and Egger¡¯s regression analysis indicated no publication bias in any of the biomarkers. This meta-analysis suggests that consuming barley fiber may positively impact glucose iAUC, GI, and 1-hour blood glucose levels and confirms that barley fiber provides functional benefits for postprandial glucose regulation.
